What are the advantages of having a metal roof as opposed to shingles?
Metal roofing is longer lasting, durable, and more weather-resistant. Metal is a much better overall investment: there are numerous colors and panel profiles to choose from; it does not burn, rot, warp, split, or crack and is impervious to termites and pests.
Aren’t metal roofs noisy?
The noise generated by a metal roof that is properly installed over a flat deck and insulation is no greater than that of a shingle system.
Will the look of a metal roof fit into my neighborhood?
There are colors and profiles available that blend in with existing shingle colors. Local building codes and neighborhood bylaws should be addressed when considering metal roofing.
What is the life expectancy of a metal roof?
A quality metal roof that is properly installed should last the owner’s lifetime. In fact, because metal withstands so many elements, metal roofing is known for its attractive life cycle.
How well do metal roofing systems stand up to the elements?
Properly installed metal roofing will withstand inclement weather (high winds, hail, snow, and rain) better than any other roofing material. Metal easily sheds snow and ice and does not absorb water, which can lead to cracking and rotting in the freeze-thaw cycling of other materials. In testing, metal systems have withstood winds up to 200 mph and have historically survived hurricanes and wind storms when other materials have failed. In addition, metal does not burn, rot, warp, split, or crack and is impervious to termites and pests.
What does metal roofing weight compared to other roofing materials?
Steel roofing weighs from .7 to 1.3 lbs. per square foot, depending upon the gauge and configuration. Shingles average 2 to 2.5 lbs. per square foot. Clay tile weighs approximately 10 lbs. per square foot.
How is metal roofing ordered?
Metal roofing is custom-cut to the nearest inch based on individual project measurements, and panels are available in lengths up to 40′. Color-matching trim is available.
How is metal roofing applied? To what substrate?
The manufacturer recommends that metal roofing be applied over a flat deck and felt paper with wood screws. Basic knowledge of sheet metal work is required for trimming panels, cutting valleys, hips, and penetrations, fitting of trim, and proper application of fasteners.
What is the cost of metal roofing compared to shingles? Compared to Shakes? To other materials?
Although the initial expense of metal roof systems may be higher than shingles, the lifetime cost-benefit ratio of metal roofing has been unequivocally proven superior to that of either shake, slate, or tiles. Please feel free to contact us for current market material and installation rates.
Do you qualify for the Strengthen Alabama Homes program?
Metal Roofing Center & Supply is proud to announce that it is now a qualified contractor with the Strengthen Alabama Homes (SAH) program.
The Alabama State Legislature enacted the SAH program in 2011 to help Alabama homeowners update and modify their homes to withstand hurricanes and other catastrophic windstorm events better. The program provides financial assistance to qualifying Baldwin and Mobile Counties residents for residential work explicitly done on existing, owner-occupied, and single-family homes.
